Unit Rationale: History and research shows that being part of a community has great positive effects on a person’s life. Community can teach collaboration, provide inspiration and belonging, as well as support a student (person) through personal or academic struggles.
Unit Cross-Curricular and Interdisciplinary Connections:
Literacy - students will read and discuss excerpts from “The Art of Protest” by De Nichols. They will apply the ideas from the book about using art to represent events and ideas and carry the feelings of those to a wider audience.
Social studies - Students will investigate different types of communities and choose to create an artwork that supports their chosen community. Students will be encouraged to choose a community that they are a part of or in some way connected to in order to promote community participation and avoid appropriation / ”savoir” ideology.
